Psalms 109

Vengeance Invoked upon Adversaries.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

1 O aGod of my praise,
bDo not be silent!
2For they have opened the
Lit wicked mouth and the deceitful
wicked and ddeceitful mouth against me;
They have spoken
Lit with
against me with a flying tongue.
3They have also surrounded me with words of hatred,
And fought against me gwithout cause.
4In return hfor my love they act as my accusers;
But iI am in prayer.
5Thus they have
Lit laid upon me
,
krepaid me evil for good
And lhatred for my love.

6Appoint a wicked man over him,
And let an
Or adversary, Satan
,
naccuser stand at his right hand.
7When he is judged, let him ocome forth guilty,
And let his pprayer become sin.
8Let qhis days be few;
Let ranother take his office.
9Let his schildren be fatherless
And his twife a widow.
10Let his uchildren wander about and beg;
And let them vseek sustenance
Or out of their desolate places
far from their ruined homes.
11Let xthe creditor
Lit ensnare, strike at
seize all that he has,
And let zstrangers plunder the product of his labor.
12Let there be none to
Lit continue
,
abextend lovingkindness to him,
Nor acany to be gracious to his fatherless children.
13Let his adposterity be
Lit for cutting off
cut off;
In a following generation let their afname be blotted out.

14Let agthe iniquity of his fathers be remembered
Lit to
before the Lord,
And do not let the sin of his mother be aiblotted out.
15Let ajthem be before the Lord continually,
That He may akcut off their memory from the earth;
16Because he did not remember to show lovingkindness,
But persecuted the alafflicted and needy man,
And the amdespondent in heart, to anput them to death.
17He also loved cursing, so aoit came to him;
And he did not delight in blessing, so it was far from him.
18But he apclothed himself with cursing as with his garment,
And it aqentered into
Lit his inward parts
his body like water
And like oil into his bones.
19Let it be to him as asa garment with which he covers himself,
And for a belt with which he constantly atgirds himself.
20
Lit This is
Let this be the avreward of my accusers from the Lord,
And of those who awspeak evil against my soul.

21But You, O
Heb YHWH, usually rendered Lord
God, the Lord, deal kindly with me ayfor Your name’s sake;
Because azYour lovingkindness is good, deliver me;
22For baI am afflicted and needy,
And
Lit one has pierced my heart within me
my heart is bcwounded within me.
23I am passing bdlike a shadow when it lengthens;
I am shaken off belike the locust.
24My bfknees
Or totter
are weak from bhfasting,
And my flesh has grown lean, without fatness.
25I also have become a bireproach to them;
When they see me, they bjwag their head.

26 bkHelp me, O Lord my God;
Save me according to Your lovingkindness.
27
Or That they may know
And let them bmknow that this is Your hand;
You, Lord, have done it.
28 bnLet them curse, but You bless;
When they arise, they shall be ashamed,
But Your boservant shall be glad.
29
Or My accusers will be
Let bqmy accusers be clothed with dishonor,
And
Or they will cover
let them bscover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

30With my mouth I will give thanks abundantly to the Lord;
And in the midst of many btI will praise Him.
31For He stands buat the right hand of the needy,
To save him from those who bvjudge his soul.
